Discovered by BP, "The La Brea Tar Pits (or Rancho La Brea Tar Pits) are a cluster of tar pits around which Hancock Park was formed, in urban Los Angeles. Asphaltum or tar (brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water. Over many centuries, animals that were trapped in the tar were preserved as bones." at La Brea Tar Pits, Los Angeles, CA Outdoor, Los Angeles, Urban, Angeles, Riverside, Coast, La Brea Tar Pits, Los Angeles Area, Los Angeles California

Oil and Water Oil spills aren't pretty, but this one is perfectly natural. WHOI scientist Chris Reddy and colleagues from the University of California, Santa Barbara, have been studying areas off the Santa Barbara coast where oil seeps naturally out of the seafloor. They have even discovered "asphalt volcanoes"—areas where seeping oil hardened and piled into dome-like mounds. Dance, Ideas, Water, Oil Water, Oil Spill, Oils, Light, Mounds

Since 1980,scientists have monitored geologic unrest in LongValley Caldera & at adjacent Mammoth Mountain,California. After a persistent swarm of earthquakes beneath Mammoth Mountain in1989, geologists discovered that large volumes of carbon dioxide(CO2 )gas were seeping from beneath this volcano. This gas is killing trees on the mountain and can be a danger to people. The U.S.GeologicalSurvey (USGS)continues to study theCO2 emissions to help protect the public from this invisible potential hazard Places, Long Valley, Landmarks, Mammoth Lakes, Forest Service, Valley

Clear Lake Volcanic Field is located about 90 miles north of San Francisco, California. The town of Clear Lake lies within the volcanic field as does much of the 43,000-acre fresh water lake of its namesake. The Geysers steam field, which sits at the southwest margin of the volcanic region, is host to one of the world’s most productive geothermal power plants, producing enough electricity for 850,000 homes.
