According to Marlo Johnson, Regional Director of USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office, Michigan tart cherry total production for 2021 is forecasted at 65.6 million pounds, 5% lower than the 2020 production. In Michigan, the largest tart cherry-producing state, frosts and freezing temperatures have reduced the crop and all growing regions in Michigan are suffering from drought and inconsistent irrigation availability.
Not only beautiful but also delicious – Montmorency tart cherries are literally in our backyard, and it’s blooming season! Bloom typically occurs right around Mother’s Day weekend, bringing additional beauty across the north. It’s no coincidence that Graceland Fruit is headquartered in Michigan…it is the Cherry Capital of the World! Photo: D|Z|W Photo
