Infant placing peg in container. Craft Sticks, Craft Stick Crafts
Infants and young toddlers have a developmental need to place objects inside other objects. Placing an object into a container through a small opening is called posting, and fosters hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and grasp-release. Look for containers and objects at home that will meet this developmental need: spoons in mugs, craft sticks or straws in bottles, etc.

Child shaking sound cylinder to refine auditory sense.
Activities in the Sensorial area of our classroom help a child train one of their five senses: touch, sight, smell, taste, or hearing. The Montessor Sound Cylinders hone your child’s auditory sense. Our student shakes one red cylinder and then finds the corresponding match among the blue cylinders. The distinction in sounds is small, and your child will delight in mastering this activity. You can do this at home using opaque canisters.

Toddler dusting a shelf. Practical Life Activities, Montessori Practical Life, Personal Empowerment, Environment Design, Life Skills, Joyful
A unique aspect of Montessori is Practical Life: the learning of life skills. Our classroom is the “Children’s House”, a prepared environment designed to develop your child's independence and sense of personal empowerment. Even our very young students take care of their own child-sized environment. Students prepare a snack when hungry, pour their milk and wash their dishes. They care for plants. They sew and knit. When something spills, they carefully clean up. They do so with joyful purpose!

Students working with Montessori bead chains. Montessori Materials, Geography, Schools, Cool Toys, Concrete, Progress
The specialized materials in our Montessori classroom teach your child the concrete concepts of language structure, math, geography and science on which future learning is built. The materials are progressive. Once your child has mastered a concept, we present the material in a new way to teach a novel concept that builds on the previous one. Montessori materials have stood the test of time for over 150 years and continue to be used in Montessori schools worldwide.
