The most important Maori musical instrument, the Koauau. It is a type of rim-blown flute with three fingerholes, played more or less similarly to the Kaval of the Balkans, among others. The range is around a fifth, each note is very fluid and flexible. This piece is made from ostrich bone. (The originals were often human bone, New Zealand not having had any large mammals.)
Koauau ponga ihu This is globular flute played with the nose. It is made from the hue/gourd. Small gourd with top removed and two small holes. Blowing across the top with one nostril produces flute-like sound. This has a sweet sound .
