Rita Angus (New Zealand 1908-1970), Marjorie Marshall, o/c, 1938-9, 1943. This is a portrait of Angus’s friend artist Marjorie Marshall. The two painters travelled together through Central Otago, working alongside each other. The painting, a tribute to a friend, evokes the idea of a ‘woman alone’ in the rugged southern landscape. Angus exhibited this portrait in 1939 but repainted the scarf and jersey four years later. This may explain the brighter colors of those areas. Private collection.
