Hidden Island Retreat

Hunkered into the hillside and seemingly floating over a pond, Hidden Island Retreat enjoys panoramic views of mountains, lakes and tarns, rocky alpine outcrops and tussock grasslands. Designed by Francis Whitaker of Mason & Wales Architects, in collaboration with his colleague Hamish Muir.

Nau Mai House: living the dream

October 2019 project of the month. Situated just a stone’s throw from a trout fly-fishing river, a golf course, tennis courts, and cycling and walking paths, this lakeside home will leave you awestruck. A facade made of schist, wood & metal with an infinity pool, the exterior of this home is unique and timeless.

Arranged around a series of micro-landscapes, Volcano House celebrates its North Head location, drawing inspiration from Maungauika and Cheltenham Beach, and New Zealand’s beautiful natural materials. Chris designed each home as a private entity, with separate outlooks and outdoor living spaces. “I had to maximise the 587-square-metre site to make sure the houses would fit onto it really nicely, which was tricky because the site size and the set-backs dictated a lot of elements in the design," Chris says.
