Unidentified portraits The people who sat for these cartes-de-visite have not been identified. Some of the portraits may have been commissioned by the sitters, but it is equally likely that they were taken to satisfy European demand for examples of Māori ethnological ‘types’: such images often depict their subjects in customary clothing.

Meri Te Tai Mangakahia campaigned for women’s suffrage in New Zealand. She was the first woman to address the Maori Kotahitanga Parliament in arguing that women should vote and hold office.
