Wambugu wa Mathangani and his sixteen wives. This picture was part of a set of seven steriographic cards published and copyrighted by Underwood and Underwood in 1909 and was taken by James Ricalton in 1908/09 at Wambugu's homestead then located at Nyeri, Kenya. Wambugu wa Mathangani was a well known Kikuyu personage and man means a leader, muthamakii. He was later appointed as a Paramount Chief for that region by the colonial Government.
