This glorious tree has really stood out this spring with its bright new copper red foliage looking fantastic and escaping the worst of our spring winds here in the deep south (winds were earlier in season this year) Creates a beautiful feature tree which also trims into an attractive formal hedge or screen. Deciduous, grows to 8-10m x 4-5m (or can be trimmed into a 1.5-2m tight formal hedge)
CRATAEGUS - Scarlet Hawthorn
Excellent Flowering Hawthorn selection with dense green small maple-like foliage laden with clusters of striking scarlet-red rosette flower late spring. Will tolerate most soil conditions. Makes a handsome avenue or street tree as shown in this lovely planting at Donovan Park, Invercagill (photo taken this week) Cold hardy, deciduous, grows to 5–7m

A tree noted for its large frilly soft pink fully double formed flowers that resemble rambling roses – also have a violet-like perfume. The MALUS - Flowering Crabapples have been grabbing the stage this week. This lovely group planting above supplied some years ago at Lakeside Estates, Queenstown These beautiful trees with cheerful blossom flower early to late Oct and are available in a range of flowering colours and tree forms.
PRUNUS 'Shirotae' - Mt Fuji
A beautiful tree with spreading horizontal habit. Snow white, fragrant large semi-double flowers late Sept/early October combined with fresh new green foliage. Also has stunning autumn colour turning shades of orange gold and crimson. One of our favourite Cherries. Hardy, deciduous, grows to 5 x 5m. Specimens above and below at the beautiful Otago University grounds. Trees below supplied approx 6 seasons ago and flourishing.
PLAGIANTHUS regius - Manatu - Native Ribbonwood
Hardy quick-growing native with upright columnar form then developing into a rounded crown-shaped tree. Fine lush green foliage with clusters of yellow-green flowers in summer. Withstands windy conditions, a great hardy native street tree. These neat old trees shown in Queens Park, Invercargill must be close to 100 years old. Hardy, semi deciduous depending on severity of winter, grows to 5 x 2m.
PITTOSPORUM eugenoides - Tarata - Native Lemonwood
Attractive with lime-green oval leaves that give a sweet lemon fragrance. Clusters of fine, lightly fragrant flowers early spring - attractive to Bellbird, Tui and Wax-eyes. Forms a hardy quick-growing hedge or screen, also an attractive street tree. Evergreen, grows to 5 x 3m.
Blossoming Native Trees
The Blossoming Cherries certainly catch the eye at present with their beautiful blooms and colour. Not to be overlooked though many of our own NZ Native Trees are also in full blossom!! The Sophora - Native Kowhai is a standout with its eye catching gold flowers in abundance right now. Beautiful trees with graceful weeping form. Naturally often growing around the lakes edges as this beautiful specimen show in Wanaka. The Tui's and Bellbirds have a right lolly shop of flowers to choose from!!
PYRUS calleryana 'Aristocrat' - Ornamental Pear
An excellent selection of Ornamental Pear (non-fruiting) with mass of early white blossom. Summer foliage lush green with excellent deep amber to crimson autumn colour. Tidy rounded to pyramidal form creating a hardy street or avenue tree tolerant of windy, dry and cold conditions. Grows to approx 6 x 4m.
