Celebrated on the fourth Monday in October, Labour Day commemorates the struggle for an eight-hour working day, a right that carpenter Samuel Parnell had famously fought for in 1840. Our first Labour Day was held on 28 October 1890, and it has been a statutory public holiday since 1900.
Before we can kōrero (speak) we must whakarongo (listen). This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). A week where we celebrate those presented the Māori language petition to parliament and where we plan for the continued revitalisation of te reo throughout Aotearoa. In 2018 the Government pledged to ensure one million Kiwi's can kōrero in basic te reo Māori by 2040. Are you one in a million?
