KOWHAIWHAI is a type of ornamental Māori art that uses elaborate scroll patterns. These kowhaiwhai patterns appear on a rafter from the Maori meeting house Hotunui, Ngati Maru, Hauraki, 19th Century. Hotunui was built in 1878 and now stands in the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
