David Russell Lange, ONZ, CH (4 August 1942 – 13 August 2005), served as the 32nd Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1984 to 1989. He headed New Zealand's fourth Labour Government, one of the most reforming administrations in his country's history, but one which did not always conform to traditional expectations of a social-democrat party. He had a reputation for cutting wit (sometimes directed against himself) and eloquence. Lange was born in Otahuhu of German Stock.

In the 20th century Kathleen Pine and Philip Soutar lived on a farm out of Whakatane in an ‘as-you-please marriage, uncelebrated by a clergyman’. Kathleen was Maori; Philip, Pakeha; and their lengthy love affair came to an end when Philip died at Ypres in 1917. The author introduces us to couples like Philip and Kathleen to unravel the long history of interracial relationships in New Zealand.
