Effective flea control is the best means of reducing the risk of infection. Cats that are free of fleas (and flea dirt) are not capable of spreading the infection even if they themselves are infected with Bartonella henselae. It is also a good idea not to encourage your cat to play roughly with you. Rough play behavior can result in bites and scratches from your cat. Cat scratch disease- primary plaques. The risk of contracting cat-scratch disease is always very real for cat-owners and their families, and the symptoms tend to be even more severe in babies and young children. Of course, not every scratch will automatically lead to an outbreak of CSD, but if you teach your children to play gently and safely with their pet, most incidents can be avoided. "Prevention is the best cure there is! There is no vaccine available for Cat Scratch Fever. However, keeping your home clear of fleas and ticks can go a long way! Using flea preventatives can help your kitties from becoming infected, which in turn keeps you from becoming infected. Also, make sure that you and your children interact gently with stray or feral cats and kittens. Avoid getting scratched or bitten!". - Demonstration of power, pt. 2 by Marcin Wichary, via Flickr Paws And Claws, Cat Claws, Crazy Cat Lady, Crazy Cats, Declawing Cats, Cute Cats, Funny Cats, Adorable Kittens, Serval Cats

About Cat Scratch Disease "Cat scratch disease is not contagious from person to person. The bacteria are spread by the scratch or bite of an infected animal, most often a kitten. They can also be transmitted if the animal's saliva comes in contact with an eye or through broken skin. Sometimes multiple cases occur in the same family, usually via contact with the same infected animal. Having one episode of cat scratch disease usually makes people immune for the rest of their lives."
