Things to Do in Boston — OLD BRAND NEW

Whenever I travel, I always pack way too many film cameras with me. Some people overpack clothes and shoes. I overpack cameras. A medium format, point and shoot, rangefinder, and a polaroid? I got them all! And like all over packers, none of them actually make it out of the bag. Th

Short Gallery

In contrast to the grandeur of many of the other galleries on the second and third floors of the Museum, the Short Gallery provides an informal environment for viewing Isabella Stewart Gardner’s collection of prints and old master drawings, as well as a selection of books, textiles, and family portraits. Drawings by Michelangelo and Bronzino vie for attention with works on paper by Gardner’s contemporaries like Henri Matisse and Anders Zorn.

Macknight Room

As the only room in the Museum to be named after a contemporary artist, this space pays tribute to the work of Dodge Macknight, whose watercolors line its walls. Before 1915 this room served as an apartment for Isabella Stewart Gardner’s guests—including John Singer Sargent, Okakura Kakuzo, and Matthew Stewart Prichard. It later became Isabella’s private reception room. Beyond the works of Dodge Macknight, this gallery largely devoted to the display of works by Gardner’s close friends and…

East, North, and West Cloister

With low vaulted ceilings and stone benches, the red brick Romanesque-style Cloisters that surround the courtyard on the Museum’s ground floor provide a quiet frame around the dramatic four-story courtyard. Sculptures from medieval European churches and monasteries dominate the space but are mixed with objects from other periods and cultures. To one side, exuberant figures dance together on a Roman sarcophagus, while an intricately carved Islamic tombstone can be found nearby beneath the…

Much Adieu About Really Important Things

Much has been said about the recent anniversary of the Isabella Stewart Gardner heist. Trimming all of the developments, investigations, and news stories down into one skeleton of a sentence is not an easy thing to do, but here is the gist: Twenty-five years ago, in 1990, thieves disguised as police officers entered the museum, bound the guards, and stole works by some of The Greats: Manet, Rembrandt, and Degas. And they still haven't been returned. Art such as the pieces housed in museums…
