Following on from what Alan showcased a few lectures ago, I made my own impression boards of varying groups/distinctions of people. These images were gathered from a simple google image search. It includes 'man' and 'woman' search results, along with 'working class' and 'middle class'.
Been getting heaps of ideas regarding ways in which people's class can be observed or guessed here in New Zealand and across the Western world. One way that has been coming up frequently in Campbell Live articles and in the media in general are the sometimes third world diseases kids from lower decile schools are contracting in our country.
While watching Coronation street the other night an idea struck me. The show depicts everyday working class brits and their life dramas, in a nostalgic, sentimental light. It presents an unrealistic view of working class existence and community as being very simple, comfortable and safe. Working at a chip shop or garage and centering your social life around the local pub is shown to be a satisfying way of living.
