You know when you’re shining bright, holding forth, and then you catch yourself. Apologise for your enthusiasm. Or someone talks over you, puts you down, rolls their eyes at you. That’s squashing. Giving up on your dreams, either because someone told you that they were ridiculous, or because you don’t believe that you could ever do it, be good enough. That’s squashing. Changing the kind of person you are to be more acceptable to others, for whatever reason. That’s squashing.
We can try and lift people, and help them, and support them, but sometimes they aren’t ready. Sometimes they’re lying on the ground refusing to get up. Sometimes they’re frightened to get up. They push us away, shout, cover their eyes. When people want to be lifted, it’s a lot easier.
"You can’t do it all. Put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others. So how do we refill our tanks? What forms do our oxygen masks take? It depends on each of us, but here are some suggestions. Refuelling our tanks, putting on that oxygen mask, will make so many thing so much easier emotionally."
"As with many things in life, it’s how we use our masks that determines whether they help or hinder us. The moment they restrict us from feeling able to access help, or from being who we really are, then we know we should probably drop them. Dropping your mask can be scary, but it can also be liberating"
