September 23, 1869: Mary Mallon, "Typhoid Mary" born. Mary was an asymptomatic carrier of the typhoid bacillus, and ended up confined for life in a hospital facility on North Brother Island. There were at least 50 other known carriers in New York, some of whom served food to the public, and yet none of them were treated as harshly. Was it her fiery Irish temperament, or the fact that she was an Irish immigrant servant that got Mary special treatment? That's Mary on the bed in the foreground. After the robbery at the Kreditbanken at Norrmalmstorg Square in Stockholm, the hostages said they were more afraid of the police than the robbers. Small wonder.
