Acting F/L Alan C "Al" Deere of No 54 Squadron RAF is presented with the DFC by King George VI at RAF Hornchurch on 27 June 1940. In just 5 days during actions in support of the Dunkirk evacuation, the New Zealander tallied 7 victories, plus 1 shared, 1 probable and 1 damaged.

Alan Christopher “al” Deere New Zealand pilot who shot down several Bf 109’s . On 28th May 1940 he was shot down over Dunkirk . After crash landing in a Belgian beach he was rescued and traveled to Oost Dunkerke where he had a head injury dressed . He then hitched a ride to Dunkirk and managed to board a boat back to Dover 19 hours after leaving R.A.F Hornchurch. Awarded the DFC ON 12th June which was presented to him by King George VI on 27th June 1940
