Edmund Gaines (1777 – 1849) was a US Army officer who served with distinction during the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars and the Black Hawk War. At the Siege of Fort Erie Gaines was in command on the fortifications on 15 August 1814, when a British assault was bloodily repulsed. For this victory Gaines was awarded the Thanks of Congress, an Act of Congress Gold Medal, and a brevet promotion to major general. All were confederate veterans, and all from Alachua County. General Lawrence Whitfield Jackson is the fourth man from the left on the front row.

Skeeter's Big Biscuits  5 lbs flour 1 quart buttermilk 1 tbsp salt 4 tbsp baking powder  3 sticks butter  Whisk, flour, salt & baking powder together.Cut butter into small pieces & crumble. Make a well in the center & add 1 qt of buttermilk.Mix it but remember the more you mix the tougher & less rise your biscuit gets.Put on a buttered sheet pan & pat down evenly.Bake at 400 for 15 minutes then butter the tops & bake another 5-10 minutes. Note- using self-rising flour; eliminate baking…

View of the Tin Can Tourists camp - Gainesville, Florida.  Before the modern highway, side hotels were the tourist camps all over Florida, such as this "Tin Can Tourist Camp" in Gainesville. Gainesville had many tourist camps, and this one dates from the years immediately following World War I when traveling became popular and automobiles became more plentiful.

Swamp Rat 30: Herb Parks and me built SR xxx in the Ocala shop in the fall of 1985, this was the last word in Top Fuel dragsters at the time, a very streamlined vehicle, even today, first time out at the 1986 Gatornationals I broke the 270 barrier with a blistering 272.56 MPH! While I was setting another record at Englishtown NJ, 5.34 Seconds, I flipped the car over backwards. Herb and I rebuilt the car and went on to win the 1986 NHRA World Championships. The Smithsonian Museum has this…
