Manu Tukutuku- Kites

Last year, all of the year five and six students made manu tukutuku to be shown at our annual Calf Club. The idea came from the book ‘Māori Art for Kids’ which you can find here.

Kites of different shapes and sizes were made from raupo leaves, with frameworks of rods and twigs. Some of the larger, elaborate ones were in the form of hawks. This drawing was made in 1819 by Titore, a young chief from Te Tai Tokerau (Northland) who was visiting England at the time.
