Arachne is the legend of a young woman from Lydia who offended the goddess Athena and was punished for her arrogance. Some accounts state Arachne was a princess while other state she was a shepherd's daughter who was a gifted weaver Arachne denied her gift came from Athena (the goddess of weaving).  Athena became angry when she saw how Arachne had insulted the gods. She tore her tapestry into pieces.
