The Memorial Tower stands proud and tall at the top of Durie Hill. It was erected to the memory of 513 young members of the Armed Services from the city of Whanganui and surrounding District who fell in the 1914 to 1918 War. Built from fossilised shell rock dated at more than two million years old, the over 100 ft tall Memorial Tower has 176 steps leading to the best views I think of Whanganui. On a clear day you can also see Mount Ruapehu and Mount Taranaki, a truely wonderful experience.
