A day out

Hello! We live in Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city and we think its great! Perched on a series of old extinct volcanoes, fringed by sandy beaches and dotted with leafy parks - it's a great place to raise a family. Check out our website everywhereyougo.co.nz for a slice of New Zealand family life.

La Cigale French farmers market by Everywhere you go. La Cigale is tucked away behind other buildings on St Georges Bay Road and is a little hidden slice of delectable France in the inner city. Owners Elisabeth and Mike Lind travel regularly to France and bring back the very best of wine, food, antiques and textiles for Auckland's Francophiles and serve French style food from their cafe.

Shakespear is one of over 30 Regional Parks in the Auckland Region. Shakespear is a farm park (lambs in Spring!) with three safe sandy beaches with the advantage of being north and south facing – if it’s windy at one, it’s likely to be sheltered on another.

When we planned this weeks pick-your-own adventure and our daughter asked what kind of apples there would be and then answered her own question with "oh I know, we can check the stickers on them!" we knew this trip to an orchard was long overdue!

Tawhitokino is a small secluded coastal regional park about 50 minutes east of Auckland city. It is only accessible by foot (or by boat!) by walking around the rocks at low tide and then up over the headland. Its worth the adventure as you will have the beautiful sweeping beach of golden sand fringed by shady pohutukawas pretty much to yourself!

Mahurangi Regional Park straddles both sides of the beautiful Mahurangi Harbour. The park is divided into two parts: Mahurangi East which is only accessible by sea and Mahurangi West which can be reached by car, 55 minutes north of Auckland City. We visited Mahurangi West with three sheltered pohutakawa fringed beaches that are perfect for swimming at any tide.

The Headland Sculpture on the Gulf walk was initiated with the aim to inspire and challenge New Zealand established and emerging artists and to provide an art experience for visitors to the island outside the usual gallery spaces. 10 years later, the exhibition is a permanent fixture on the summer arts calendar and has expanded to includes a large pavilion on the beach front at Matiatia Bay. You can enjoy art, music, wine and food here before or after (or both!) your walk.

Just voted number 35 on the New York Times list of things to do in the world, you still have a week or so to visit the Headland sculpture on the gulf exhibition…
