Russian poet Alexander Pushkin is considered by many to the the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature.  Pushkin's great-grandfather, was Abram Petrovich Gannibal (1696–1781), a Black African page raised by Peter the Great.

A reproduction of this painting hung in my Russian language and literature class in Moscow, and I remember how our teacher loved to talk about Pushkin’s polished nails as something that particularly set him apart as a refined and self-aware dandy.
