Max Perutz shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with John Kendrew “for… studies of the structures of globular proteins.” Kendrew studied the structure of hemoglobin using x-ray diffraction, examining ~250,000 reflections. Perutz wrote on the subject of oxidation of the ferrous ion in his 1990 book, Mechanisms of Cooperativity and Allosteric Regulation in Proteins.
