In the recession, the American Dream is alive, if not entirely well, according to a poll by The New York Times and CBS News.

The American Dream is a national ethos of the United States, the set of ideals (democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity, and equality) in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility for the family and children, achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers.

The Brookings Institute conducted the survey and attributed the drop in confidence most likely to the economic downturn. For the average person, the American Dream has become more expensive recently, in fact, almost out of reach.

For many generations & decades, the American dream had promised an egalitarian society and material prosperity. During the 1950's, however, The American Dream became a reality. Within reach, families were able to own a house on their own land, a car, a dog, and 2-3 kids. Postwar affluence redefined the American Dream: gone was the poverty born in the Great Depression and years of wartime sacrifice were over.

This woman believes she once lived the American Dream, only for it to be taken away. If Americans can't hold onto their goals through changing times, how can all citizens expect the American Dream? It's possible for some, but the social boundaries and economic recession inhibits growth towards the complete American Dream.

This woman once lived the American Dream. Due to recent economic problems, she is no longer able to live that lifestyle. She and many others feel that the American Dream has been stolen from them. How do we continue to keep the dream alive?
