William Clark Gable (1901-1960) After his 3rd wife, Carole Lombard died, Gable joined the U.S. Army Air Forces.  Gable flew five combat missions, including one to Germany, as an observer-gunner in B-17 Flying Fortresses.  He retired from service as a major in 1944.
