David O. Selznick was the enfant terrible of moviemaking — fast-thinking and visionary, he wrote lengthy, daunting memos; got involved with every aspect of the production; and worked on each project like a man possessed (to the cost of his private life with first wife Irene). A man with big appetites for everything, he did nothing on a small scale. He did not make small movies.
