James Boswell, 1740-1795. Diarist & biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson, 1765, George Willison. Boswell's father feared he would be a complete failure. In 1763, under threat of disinheritance, sent to study law in Holland. Left to visit Berlin & Paris, meeting Rousseau & Voltaire & befriending Corsican nationalists. On return to Britain, he began a lifelong friendship with Samuel Johnson, a relationship immortalised in his biography, 'Life of Samuel Johnson'. Inherited title Laird of Auchinleck
