In 79AD Mt Vesuvius erupted and covered Pompeii and the surrounding area under hot ash and stone both destroying and preserving it. It was a vibrant seaside port but now about three miles from the sea. Thousands died in the catastrophe and the city disappeared. It was discovered and looted in the 1700s until the Italian government locked it down. More than 2/3s of the city is still buried. A ring found there was inscribed, "They say? What do they say? Let them say!"
