The UK government claims more than 16,000 first-time home buyers have saved thousands of pounds as a result of recent changes to stamp duty outlined in the Autumn Budget. Stamp duty was cut for first time buyers up to the value of £300,000 – a move the government claimed would equate to a tax cut for 95 per cent of first-time buyers, with 80 per cent paying no stamp duty at all.
