A church has stood on this site for many centuries; the first documented reference is in a charter of King David in 1138.  The present nave was finished around 1426, the chancel about 50 years later, and the apse was added in 1531. During the Wars of Independence Edward I of England used the church as a military storehouse until King Robert the Bruce sacked the garrison here.
