As a result of the Spanish American War of 1898, as per The Treaty of Paris, Spain ceded Puerto Rico, the Phillipine Islands and Guam to the U.S.A. On March 2, 1917, The Jones - Shafroth Act was signed granting collective U.S. citizenship to Puerto Ricans without rescinding their Puerto Rican citizenship. Puerto Ricans do not need Passports to travel between Puerto Rico and the U.S.A.

As of March 1917 the people of Puerto Rico have been recognized as US citizens without rescinding their Puerto Rican citizenship.

Treaty of Paris-This treaty was signed on 1783 ended the Revolutionary war.  Some things that this treaty said were that if either side owed debts than you have to pay it back.  The U.S. will stop taking away land from loyalists.  It also said it will establish boundaries between the colonies and Great Britain.  One of the other rules was to acknowledge the U.S. of being a free country.
