Hand 'work'
When a child exercises muscles in the hand, she/he is actually forming the brain. Handwork, in the traditional sense, are activities such as sewing, darning, mending, embroidery, weaving and knitting. One of my Waldorf mentors told me that handwork is deeply related to the development of morality. Just watch a five year old sew! It is magical! But I also think that all acts of creation by the use of the hands is handwork! Joseph Chilton Pearce said that the fingers were the eyes of the…
Hand Sewing Like the Pilgrims
MATERIALS: To sew with kindergarteners all you need are blunt tipped needles (found in the needlepoint section), burlap fabric, yarn and a marker to write the first initial of the student on the burlap. I used a paint pen to write the letter in white on the dark brown burlap. I double threaded the needles and tied a knot. I started the needle for the children. The best way I have found to teach hand sewing in a 'running stitch' is to explain that it is an AB pattern in which you go…
Finger Knitting and Sewing Like Elves!

Click here for a video on how to finger knit. Because a long piece of yarn will end up so short - making bracelets is the best first step! This student wanted to try it on different kinds of yarn and string. Here he is finger knitting twine. Clearly, he couldn't stop knitting! He was draped in his good work…
Hand Sewing for Literacy

In her book 'Sewing School: 21 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make' I had adored the simple but highly engaging projects like the Superhero Cuff and the Wonder Wallet for my kindergartners. It was an inspiration to my commitment to providing the powerhouse of hand work. Here is the thing. In early childhood, children are building their capacity to use…

Sewing Projects for Kids: Starting Out With Embroidery
When I was pregnant with AJ, we were very aware of involving Immy in many of the preparations for the new baby’s arrival. One of the ways we did this was inviting Immy to create special artworks to be framed and displayed in the baby’s bedroom, including this wonderful embroidered piece. I wrote in detail […]
