Treaty of Waitangi - Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Partnership agreement between Māori rangatira and the British Crown. The Treaty was drafted in English and translated into Māori by missionary Henry Williams and his son Edward. It was presented to around 500 Māori rangatira at Waitangi on February 5, 1840 and there was much debate. On February 6, approximately 45 rangatira signed the Treaty, Hone Heke being the first. By the end of the year over 500 Māori rangatira had signed the Treaty.
