Botswana Butchery is the new occupant in the space. But my memory of this joint is something I wish I could delete. I was intrigued to visit – it is just across the street from my apartment and I had walked past several times on the way to work in the viaduct as its fit-out progressed. Thought the cleavers as door handles were either an amusing touch or twee bad taste.

Morton Estate Chardonnay 2009 A humble wine relative to its big sister the Coniglio, but no less pleasurable. Ripe, lush, and laden with citrus, tropical fruit, and baked apple. That combined with a rich creaminess under pinned with oak. Cleansing and refreshing acidity, with good length and balance. 90 Points 5 Stars RRP $34.99 http://www.unscrewed.co.nz/morton-estate-black-label-chardonnay-2009

All of Dry River wines are made to age. They also all still are sealed under cork. Even tasting a 1985 Sauvignon Blanc, albeit very close to being dead it still showed some varietal character, highlighted that these wines were built for longevity and not instant gratification. New Zealand Pinot Noir and Syrah is often talked about falling over after 5 years, these wines will last you 20+.

We covered all of the regions from Martinborough, Marlborough, Waipara, and Central Otago. We also covered many price points, with wine ranging from $25 all the way through to $100. I then asked the audience to raise their hands on who liked Central Otago Pinot Noir the most. Of the audience there was a show of hands from 80%.

These days Misha’s Vineyard brand is recognised, and they are a year ahead of schedule on their 10 year plan. Few new New Zealand wineries are able to say that these days. These guys are a thoroughbred in the making. With great temperament but focused and knows what it needs to do to be a winner. Fine and delicately structured, they sit comfortably in the stable complimenting one another.

cork vs screwcaps When screwcaps just don’t cut it! New Zealand wine seems to have a love hate relationship with cork. The romance appeals to them, but the budget doesn’t. A simple design, for the upcoming Marlborough Dinner Series, could’ve used screwcaps in its design, but they’re just not evocative enough, so they used corks. You either believe in them, or you don’t! http://www.unscrewed.co.nz/when-screwcaps-just-dont-cut-it-3/

Te Wahi Pinot Noir The most iconic Marlborough winery is abandoning their roots and have decided to make from elsewhere. Yep, you read that correctly. It seems that every man and his dog wants a Central Otago to throw around these days. But really, is Cloudy Bay’s market position under threat, or is it a case that Central Otago have done such a marvellous job..... RRP $80 http://www.unscrewed.co.nz/cloudy-bay-central-otago-pinot-noir-really/

Ti Point Pinot Gris 2011 Marlborough The colour shone brilliantly through the glass, the nose seductive, with citrus fruit but also an underlying exotic fruits, there was also a synthetic character that troubled me. The slightly off-dry palate issued an abundance of fruit, good texture and long finish, but that synthetic carried through to the palate and although a very easy drinking wine felt awkward, almost angular. 82 Points 4 Stars RRP $22
