Champion race car driver Elfrieda Mais, 41, circa Aug. 16, 1933. The Indianapolis-born Mais started working in 1910 as an airplane stunt woman and wing walker, but switched to racing cars by 1912. Mais was not allowed to race against men, but she competed in speed trails against the clock and stunt driving exhibitions.
