The Battle of Monte Cassino was a heartbreaking battle in WW2 fought at an abbey built in 529AD and used as a safe house for art. The Germans told the Allies they would not occupy the Abbey but the Allies bombed it anyway. A crack German division took over. The battle raged for 5 months. The Allies lost 50,000 men, the Germans 20,000. Four frontal assaults to the abbey were crushed. The art was destroyed. Finally, the Germans pulled back and the Allies took Rome but the German 10th Army…
