Crossing Queen Street
These pedestrians are crossing at the intersection of Auckland’s Queen and Wellesley streets, about 1960. By the 1950s city dwellers crossed busy streets at their peril, and most used pedestrian crossings for their own safety.

Here is another photo of the Auckland waterfront which was not included in the book New Zealand Maritime Images: the golden years. This shows both the Kestrel and the Toroa steam ferries on the left wharf and other craft, now history, at the centre wharf.
Auckland 22 turning into Pitt St. 1953
A flashback to 1953 captured by GRAHAM STEWART. Auckland Transport Board B.U.T. No.22 on Route 4 Westmere, turns from Karangahape Road into Pitt Street on the way back to the terminus in the City in Victoria Street. Trams were still serving Pt Chevalier at this stage.
