Meri Te Tai Mangakahia was a Maori activist for women's suffrage in New Zealand. In 1892 she was elected Prime Minister of Parliament Kotahitanga in Hawke's Bay. Mangakahia was the first woman to submit a motion to vote (by Parliament) to give women the right to vote and to be allowed to stand up during elections. In it she cited, that Maori women were landowners and should not be excluded from political life. Pinterest @sweetness
