This is a blossom of the pohutukawa tree. a native New Zealand tree which flowers for only a short time around November/December. For this reason, it is known as the New Zealand Christmas tree. I have seen similar flowers on Flickr from trees in other countries so I presume it has close relatives. Be warned: don't park under a pohutukawa tree in flower - all the little strands of the flower get stuck in your windscreen wipers for weeks!
