This is a blossom of the pohutukawa tree. a native New Zealand tree which flowers for only a short time around November/December. For this reason, it is known as the New Zealand Christmas tree. I have seen similar flowers on Flickr from trees in other countries so I presume it has close relatives. Be warned: don't park under a pohutukawa tree in flower - all the little strands of the flower get stuck in your windscreen wipers for weeks!

The blaze of yellow kowhai crowning the New Zealand forest is a sure sign of spring. The leaves, flower buds and open flowers are important food sources for native birds, and the flowers are also sources of nectar for honeyh eaters, and it is these birds, not bees, that are the tree's pollinators.
