The painting Girl with a Pearl Earring (Dutch: Het Meisje met de Parel). circa 1665, oil on canvas, is one of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's masterworks and, as the name implies, uses a pearl earring for a focal point. Today the painting is kept in the Mauritshuis gallery in The Hague. It is sometimes referred to as "the Mona Lisa of the North" or "the Dutch Mona Lisa." Wikipedia.

Frans Hals "The Merry Lute Player". Frans Hals the Elder (1580-1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. Hals was also instrumental in the evolution of 17th century group portraiture. He is best known for his portraits of wealthy citizens, and was considered a Baroque painter who practiced an intimate realism with a radically free approach. He studied under painter Karel van Mander.
Johannes Vermeer's The Astronomer c.1668 is a great example of this Dutch painter's domestic scenes. A painter of the Dutch Golden Age and baroque era, Vermeer is known for using especially expensive pigments and for his treatment of light. Check out the light pouring through the window in this piece, and the great shadows being cast by the objects in the scene.
