Princess Victoria was the eldest of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s nine children and was about four years old when this portrait was painted. The Duchess of Kent, Queen Victoria’s mother, was so pleased with the portrait that she gave the artist a silver snuff box. Queen Victoria described it as ‘a charming likeness of Vicky’.
Victoria sank into depression after he died at age 42 of typhoid fever on December 14, 1861 at Windsor Castle. Victoria went into self-imposed seclusion for more than 25 years, not emerging until the Golden Jubilee of 1887, the celebration of her fiftieth year on the throne. An entire generation was raised without ever having seen the face of their Queen. The Golden Jubilee brought her out of her shell and she again embraced public life. but for the rest of her life she wore black.

He was brought up in Coburg, Germany, and shared her interest in art. On 10 February 1840 they were married in the Chapel Royal, St Jamess Palace. This portrait of Victoria was sketched by Albert in that same year.
