New Zealand Falcon Falco novaeseelandiae Maori name: Karearea A pair of New Zealand Falcon have been breeding at Zealandia for the past few years. They have returned to Zealandia this Winter and hopefully will be rearing a brood or two again this coming spring. This is the male.
Yesterday I had close encounters with our precious endemic New Zealand Falcon (karearea). A new event for me. This one was guarding her chick in it's nest further down the hill. Isn't she a beauty. Check out those talons - I have a 4cm souvenir from them on the right side of my scalp. But it was so worth it.
