As published Nov. 25, 1965. Vancouver Barracks, the one-time Columbia Barracks and Fort Vancouver, still is a military center although it has been constricted in size by the expanding city. Grounds are well maintained and many Army buildings sill remain. The building, pictured, is the headquarters of the Oregon sector of the X . Army Corps.
Charles W. Shumway, born in Epworth, Iowa, in April 1861. Shumway and his wife traveled to Vancouver in 1895 when he became the superintendent of schools. He recalled that there were 756 pupils in the schools and a regiment of soldiers in the Barracks. Fifteen teachers took care of the pupils and 32 saloons took care of most of the money paid to the soldiers.
