Trade Axes

The Pātītī (short-handled hatchet) is made in the tradition of the “trade axe.” Trade axes were a post-colonial innovation and were used both as tools and as weapons. They were desirable to Māori in that the steel heads were easier to acquire and more durable than the traditional stone axe-heads.
