Lovingly handcrafting unique, creative & beautiful kiwi resources!
This little one cut 'Mihi/Pepeha' booklet is a great scaffold to support your students with learning their mihi! The small size is perfect for holding discretely in your palm for quick reference during assembly or in class, and the pictures provide extra guidance for your little ones. Simply print, fill in and colour, then follow the picture instructions to cut, fold and assemble your little booklet. If you'd like more room for your students to explore their whakapapa, I suggest enlarging…

Green Grubs Garden Club
I love having a positive and celebratory learning focus - especially in the middle of winter! Matariki has links to so many areas of the curriculum and key competencies - science, art, myths and legends, gardening, healthy eating, goal setting and reflection to name just a few. I'm sure that most primary teachers will agree that the best way into most topics and inquiry is through a great book - so I've compiled a little list of my favourites! Most of these books come complete with several…

If you don't know much about Matariki you can find some details here: Ko te whānau o Matariki: Matariki Education Resource - Te Papa: The Museum of New Zealand

*M*A*T*A*R*I*K*I* 2017
Last year a good friend asked me if I had heard that two new whetū in the Matariki cluster, had been named (Pōhutukawa and Hiwaiterangi). She was a tauira at Te Wananga o Aotearoa and had the privilege of listening to a tohunga kōkōrangi (astronomer) who has been studying celestial bodies for 20 years and made this discovery through whānau manuscripts and rangahau. When he delved a little further he found that most of the books written about Matariki, based on the 7 whetū, are versions…
Matariki Biscuits
Matariki Biscuits straight out of the oven None of the ingredients in the batch of Matariki Biscuits I baked last Friday were available to Maori when they first began celebrating Matariki in Aotearoa. Given the damage that too much butter, sugar and white flour have done to the health of Kiwis of all ethnicities since then, this was probably a good thing. However if baked as a once-a-year treat a batch of these biscuits will not hurt anyone, and may even bring joy to those who like…
