Maui and the sun

We have been reading the book Maui and the sun. It's about how Maui and his brothers work as a team to slow down the sun so that everyone can enjoy longer days. We talked about how we are a team as well and shared our ideas about how we all help in our classroom. Then we made our own sun and took photos of ourselves pulling the sun in. It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed learning how to use the cameras. Take a look at our finished display.

Root of Life - The overall design of the painting resembles the Maori symbol, the Koru. The Koru represents the beginning of a new life and purity to the world. Once again, I decided to use lots of colours to show that the life ahead is an exciting journey. The beginning to the journey is narrow, where parents and help is constantly present to help prepare one for the tougher road ahead, represented by the wider end of the journey. [Aboriginal, Maori]

Long ago, according to the legend of Māui, the Sun was the focus of attention. People wanted more daylight and warmth to get their jobs done. Māui schemed to harness the Sun. Maui, Hawaii, Art Maori, Art Soleil, Maori Legends, Maori Designs, Kiwiana, Sun Art, Art Activities

Māui and the Sun

In this activity, students are introduced to the concept of harnessing the Sun’s energy for our use on Earth. They will appreciate that the early Māori were also thinking about the Sun in relation to the Earth as depicted in the legend Māui and the Sun. The students will explore nuclear fusion (the nuclear reaction that releases energy in the Sun) and the electromagnetic spectrum (the energy waves that reach the Earth).
