'Have a budget spreadsheet and plug estimates for fixed bills. Then plug actuals against known vs approx payments. This gives remaining monies for other needs like clothes, fast food treats and savings.'

'My way to save money is to run past all the goodies because they always get me!'
'Plan meals for the week, go to butchers for meat and markets or veggie stores to save a few bucks, as well as going to the 'reduced to clear' shop.'
I actively keep up to date using a personal organiser and try to cut costs by removing stuff I do not need during my weekly grocery shop!'
'I always ask myself 'Do I need this?'. Then I ask 'Can I afford this?'. You can only spend your money once, so spend it wisely. I write out shopping lists, have accounts for different purposes, do a budget, have taken in a boarder to help with expenses, and always look for ways to cut my electricity bill down.'
'I write everything out in a notebook, and use cash for extracurricular/play money for the week. I leave the eftpos alone except for bills.'
'I find withdrawing cash and having to stick to that is a good way to be conscious of spending and the budget.'
'We record everything on a spreadsheet via the computer, working out the incomings and outgoings.'
'When I go out I only take what I am intending to spend, and leave credit cards and eftpos cards at home.'
'I use automatic payments or direct debits for all my outgoings except food, so you know exactly what you have left for groceries and odds and ends.'
'To be honest I growl at my husband in the supermarket when something takes his fancy! He soon comes to his senses! Doing a budget and sticking to it, are two different things. You have to be hard-nosed at times and both in agreement.'
'I have a separate 'bill blaster' account that has an automatic payment directly from my wages, so that when I wake up on a Thursday all my bills are paid. What's in my account is then for groceries, travel and family day.'
'Try to avoid the following if you want to save money: cigarettes, alcohol, lollies & chocolate, snack foods and ready-made dinners.'
'Bills paid first, then a percentage for food, petrol and savings then what's left if I'm lucky enough to have any, I can use on something for me.'
'Each payday I put a little bit into my different NZCU South accounts. And I get to spend the rest, and if I have any leftover it gets put into one of those accounts.'
